Free ‘Gasland’ showing at EMU
“Hydrofracking” – the term has a harsh sound to it, and according to a highly-acclaimed film documentary, what it entails is having harsh consequences for many communities.
“Gasland” (gaslandthemovie.com/trailer), the Academy Award-nominated film by Josh Fox, will be shown 7 p.m. Friday, Apr. 8, in the Suter Science Center Auditorium at Eastern Mennonite University.
The film tells the story behind the story of big gas company’s efforts to “hydrofrack” – drill with water and chemicals – beneath growing amounts of the country’s lands in search of natural gas.
The topic is especially pertinent to the EMU community and the surrounding area as gas companies set their sites on drilling opportunities locally. A discussion will follow the film showing. Many communities across the country have experienced detrimental effects as a result of the drilling, documented in this film.
The event is hosted by the Environmental Sustainability Capstone class at EMU. Admission is free.
