Shenandoah National Park celebrates Junior Ranger Day

Activities for children will be highlighted when Shenandoah National Park celebrates National Junior Ranger Day on Saturday, April 23.

Visitors will be able to examine antlers, animal tracks, and curiosities of nature on touch tables, and they will be able to try on ranger uniforms at Dickey Ridge Visitor Center (mile 4.6 on Skyline Drive) and Byrd Visitor Center (milepost 51). Short talks about black bears will also be presented.

At Byrd Visitor Center, participants will be able to check out a park patrol vehicle or ambulance, and can join a wildland firefighter working a fire hose.

At both locations, participants will be able to earn a National Junior Ranger Day certificate and patch.

In addition to special Junior Ranger Day activities, regularly scheduled ranger-led programs will be offered. The complete activity schedule is posted on the park website, www.nps.gov/shen.

Junior Ranger Day is part of National Park Week, April 16-24. Special programs are being held at national parks around the country. Check out what other parks are doing by going to the website, www.nps.gov/npweek.

Entrance fees will not be charged at Shenandoah or at over 100 national parks that usually charge entrance fees.
