Fridays on the Square celebrates its 21st season

Harrisonburg’s 21st season of the Fridays on the Square Music & Film Festival will begin on June 10 and run every Friday through Aug 26. It will be held in downtown Harrisonburg, and is a collaboration between Citizens for Downtown and Harrisonburg Downtown Renaissance.

Fridays on the Square is an annual festival that celebrates music and film through outdoor concerts and film screenings. Events are held on Court Square in downtown Harrisonburg, weather permitting. If there is a chance of rain, events are moved to the Harrisonburg Farmers Market location at Turner Pavilion, behind the Harrisonburg City Municipal Building. If rain is severe, events will be held inside at Downtown Music 34 on Court Square. All events are free and open to the public.

This year’s concert series will feature a wide range of sounds, from rock to country to blues and jazz, and include Eric Brace & Last Train Home, Karl Straub Combo, kat & the traveler/s, The Dish Dogs, George Wesley, and The Tom Principato Band. Concerts will be held from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., starting on June 10th and running every other Friday through August 19th.

This year’s film series features a wide range of titles, and there is sure to be something for everyone. Films will include Smokey & the Bandit (1977), The Karate Kid (1984), My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997), School of Rock (2003), The Princess and the Frog (2009), and locally-produced films Beardo (2010, DIGICO) and Best of Super Gr8 (2010, various local filmmakers).
